How To Do An Easy, Wispy, Updo Hairstyle

This is my go-to hairstyle for summer. It’s so easy and quick to create. It even works on my thick, currently shoulder length, Asian hair. If you watch this video by Total Beauty, you’ll notice that he ties/knots the bottom half of her hair (about 1:23 mark). Since my hair is currently too short to knot, I just twist the bottom half into a bun and secure it with bobby pins. It works just the same.

Don’t Fight Your Curls
Embrace your natural curls like Beyonce but avoid frizz by simply adding an anti-frizz serum to your morning hair routine. “I start off by adding a bit of Sebastian Potion 9 Lite Lightweight Wearable-Treatment Styler ($14; beautyencounter.com) to damp hair,” says celebrity hairstylist Jeremy Clark, who then gently scrunches the hair while blow drying on low with a diffuser. “Don’t comb it out!” he stresses. “Let it be natural and sexy.”

Try a Cute Braid
Drew Barrymore and Charlize Theron recently joined the long list of stars sporting braids this season. No matter how you wear them, celebrity hairstylist Ric Pipino says braids will hold better and longer if you “start out with wet hair, use a stronger gel than normal and spray with a little hair spray.”

Don’t Fear Your Flat Iron
Celebrity hairstylist Ursula Stephen says the key to straight hair in the summer is a ceramic wet-to-dry flat iron. First, “apply a protecting spray, such as Motions Heat Seeker Protecting Spray ($23; amazon.com) to damp hair and then use the iron,” she says. The iron helps lock in moisture and fight flyaways. Bonus tip: “After using the iron, apply the spray again on dry hair to help protect against the sun’s UV rays.”

Embrace Easy Updos
“An easy summer updo is a two second bun,” says celebrity hairstylist Larry Sim. “Just grab your hair, twist it up and pin with two jumbo bobby pins. It’s great because it doesn’t have to be perfect and you can simply wear it at the nape of your neck (like Lauren Conrad at left),” he says.

Tame Stubborn Bangs
“Bangs have a tendency to go all frizzy and wild if you’re somewhere with a lot of humidity,” says celebrity hairstylist Jeremy Clark. “I found the answer is to spray them with an anti-humidity product like Oleo-Relax Voile Fixateur by Kerastase ($34; kerastase-usa.com) and blow dry on low.” He also recommends pinning them off to the side if you’re in need of extra hold.

Don’t Let Ponytails Cause Damage
Ponytails will run rampant this summer and to keep breakage to a minimum try bungee elastics ($5/4; rickysnyc.com)—known for doing less damage than regular elastics. “You don’t have to pull hair through them, which makes your hair less prone to snags, and the hook closures give you the control to make them as tight as you like,” says celebrity hairstylist Staci Child.

Gorgeous Hair in Under 30 Minutes

Here’s another good MSN.com article.

The Lazy Woman’s Guide to Gorgeous Hair

Hair is not a test! It’s fine to cheat, take shortcuts or use a sneaky trick—especially when the results look this good.

Fake hot-roller waves in 25 minutes
You’ll save: About 35 minutes (a blowout and full head of curlers can take a good hour).
Meticulously curling every last strand isn’t the only way to transform flat hair into lush waves. “Forget the hair underneath—just pay attention to the parts that show,” says backstage pro Kevin Ryan. Blow-dry while combing hair with your fingers, pull bottom layers into a ponytail to get them out of the way and blow out just the top and front sections with a round brush. While hair is still warm, wrap two-inch chunks of hair around large Velcro rollers—five should do it (remember, you only care about the top). Mist with hairspray (try Paul Mitchell Extra-Body Firm Finishing Spray, $15, paulmitchell.com for salons). Hang for 10 minutes—do your makeup!—and remove rollers. Voilá: voluptuous waves. Watch out, Gisele!

Fake a pro dye job in 30 minutes
You’ll save: A few hours and $65 plus.
No need to spend all Saturday afternoon in a smock and a foil headdress. These days your average drugstore dye can get you rich, shiny color—not that dull, monotone look that says, “I did it myself!” Choose a formula labeled “semi-permanent”— it adds serious shine, plus it’s translucent, so you can’t go too wrong and any natural highlights you’ve got will show through. (Bonus: If you have a few gray strands, they’ll morph into highlights.) If you’re starting with a light-brown base color (like our model had), try L’Oreal Paris Color Pulse Concentrated Color Mousse in Funky Cherry ($5.50, at drugstores) to get this pretty hue.

fake-a-salon-updo-in-7-minutesPhoto: Kenneth Willardt

Fake a salon updo in 7 minutes
You’ll save: The hour and a half it typically takes a stylist to whip up a fancy bun.
Forget neatness—messy updos are eminently more fake-able. Grab hair like you’re making a pony, twist up, pin and let bits loose. Gently run a comb up and down at the roots for pouf. Finish with a bold accessory, like the furry wonder above by Kärin’s Garden ($44, Kathy Lambert’s, 251-928-4454). Or go sparkly.

fake-long-hair-in-20-minutesPhoto: Kenneth Willardt

Fake long hair in 20 minutes
You’ll save: Two years of growing out your hair (assuming you start at shoulder length).
Even the best thickening spray won’t make your hair as glorious as a few extensions. Stylist Thomas McKiver of NYC’s Oscar Bond Salon did a high ponytail with our model’s hair (exhibit A). He put a row of clip-ons beneath it (try Hairdo 22” Clip-In Straight Extensions, $100). Then he pulled some of her real hair out of the pony to hide the clips, and wrapped a strand around the ponytail’s elastic (B). For more lushness, he attached a “fall” to the base of her pony (try Put on Pieces Bounce Pony, $52, both at hairuwear.com), and gave her waves with a curling iron. Before you attach an extension, tease roots and spray with dry shampoo to give it grip. For the lip color, try Neutrogena MoistureShine Gloss in Groove ($7, at drugstores).

10 Hot Hair Trends for Prom

msn-lifestyle

I was just clicking around and stumbled across this article on MSN.com about Prom hairstyles. It’s prom season and I thought it was appropriate to share this with everybody.

10 Hot Hair Trends for Prom

Newsflash: Updos are out! This spring, it’s all about flowing locks. If your mom tries to tell you that wearing your hair down isn’t dressing up, just show her these pictures!

Bettie Bangs

Named after 1950s pinup girl Bettie Page (don’t worry if you’ve never heard of her), everyone from Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera to Dita von Teese (these references you know) is into these edgy bangs. To pull them off, create ringlets, pin back the sides, and keep the bangs blunt.

sleek-ponytails

Sleek Ponytails

Okay, so it’s not quite a down-do, but a high, super-sleek ponytail is way sexier than a stuffy updo. To really make your pony look prom-worthy, take a small strand of hair and wind it around the elastic; then fasten it just underneath the ponytail (out of sight) with a bobby pin or two.

loose-waves

Loose Waves

Forget full-on tendrils and take a cue from Britney, Taylor Swift, and Lindsay Lohan, who have all been seen sporting these soft, loose locks. The look is flirtier than straight hair, but you don’t have to commit to crazy curls.

faux-bobs

Faux Bobs

Carrie Underwood has been spotted showing off this sexy, tousled ’do. It’s a perfect way to get a whole new look without a haircut.

Va Va Voom Waves

Want a hairdo that will really turn heads? We love the look of these glossy, voluminous waves. Remember to coat your curls with a bit of nongreasy shine serum so your hair stays bouncy and lustrous all night long (yep, we mean all through the after-party).

haute-headbands

Haute Headbands

Headbands are definitely stealing the spotlight this prom season. It doesn’t matter whether your hair is straight or curly; a sparkly style will add some glitz and glamour to your down-do.

80s-crimped

’80s Crimp

Crimpers can be fun, but fight the urge to use the iron on your whole head: Remember this is prom, not Halloween. Simply style a couple of strands and keep the rest of your loose locks straight for a modern and — dare we say totally awesome — take on this retro style.

half-up-with-height

Half-Up With Height

Having trouble deciding if the down-do is really for you? Don’t stress. A half-updo (one with lots of lift) gives you the best of both worlds: a few loose strands to twirl and a no-fuss hairstyle that looks ultra-elegant.

Extreme Side Parts

Besides being totally sexy, a side-swept down-do is flattering for every face shape. To really spice up your look, try enhancing your eyes with smoky shadow.

Pinned-up Curls

Want a down-do that keeps the hair out of your eyes? Try teasing your bangs and pinning them back with a barrette for a simple and stunning hairstyle.
